It’s summer in Spokane. That means a functional air conditioning is a must to beat the heat. A completely non-function AC is pretty easy to spot. But do you know the warning signs of AC problems? Being privy to possible issues with your AC can help you stay ahead of the game.
There are three kinds of AC systems: expansion valve systems, orifice tube systems, or combo units. Air conditioning systems are made up of a compressor, a condenser, accumulator or receiver/drier, evaporator, and an orifice tube (or expansion valve). These components work in tandem to cool the air in your vehicle while removing moisture, creating a more comfortable environment for you.
Now that you know how ACs work, here are a few things to look out for that may mean yours is having issues:
If you’re driving and start to smell something foul coming from the vents, it may be a sign that there is mold growing somewhere in your AC unit. While not a mechanical issue, this can be a major health concern. It’s important to take your car into the shop to get any mystery smells diagnosed as soon as possible.
Water under your car from your AC normal and means it’s working. However, sometimes this water doesn’t drain properly. Instead of draining underneath your vehicle, sometimes this water can drain under your dashboard and around the foot pedals. IF you notice random stains on the front seat floor, you may have a leak or clog somewhere in your AC system.
If your air conditioning isn’t blowing with the same strength as usual you may have a leak on your hands. Even the smallest leak can be difficult to find. If you suspect a leak, call your local repair shop right away. Fixing leaks early can help curb bigger, more expensive issues from arising.
Rattling coming from your car is never a good sound to hear. If you start to hear rattling when the AC is on there are several possibilities. It could be that a component of your air condition system has given out.
It’s may also be a clogged unit. Leaves, small sticks, and other debris may have entered the unit, clogging things up.
If you notice any of these signs, it’s important to go to your local mechanic right away. If you’re in Spokane, come in to C & H foreign auto.
